Sports Day

The Advocacy Committee organised a sports day for everyone. Learners from the committee took part to organise the day. We had a few meetings about what sports we will do to make sure everyone was included and to get organised to make sure we had all the equipment and everything we needed for the day. We also raised money for a good charity called JIGSAW. It was amazing to see all learners and staff taking part on the day and it was great to work on our communication, teamwork, and planning skills.

Esker Ri

Bernie came to us with the idea of going to Esker Ri Nursing Home and we agreed as we thought

it would be a good experience for us to get involved in the community and get an insight into

what it’s like to work in that environment.

Our Advocate Maz organized the whole event and was very helpful to us while we were

preparing and during the visit. To prepare for the visit we made games we thought would

be fun for the residents and that they would enjoy, we made 6 or 7 games to play with them and made different ones for different levels of mobility. We were joined on the visit by the Barbers who worked well with the residents and cut their hair.

Before we went to Clara, we felt nervous because we were unsure of what to expect but we were

excited to see what it was like.

The visit was an overall good experience and we enjoyed our time there and we felt like we

brought a smile to people’s faces that might not get to go out and have fun very often and we

feel like it was a good experience for us to get to know what it’s like there.

Afterwards, we felt like it was a very rewarding and fulfilling day and would definitely recommend

it to people if they are given the opportunity.

The Future is Now

Learners from Tullamore CTC were delighted to host their first Laois & Offaly Further Education & Employment Stakeholder Forum in the Tullamore Court Hotel on Monday the 12^th of December. The forum was the culmination of work which the group undertook as part of a project entitled ‘The Future is Now’ which was funded by an EU Year of Youth Micro Grant through Leargas. The project was developed to look at the potential barriers to progression to further education and employment from the prospective of young adults. There were contributions on the day from Laois & Offaly ETB, The Tullamore Chamber, DEASP, Longford & Westmeath ETB, Jigsaw, Cormac Melia and The Offaly Local Development Company. In line with the SOLAS National FET Strategy, it is hoped that this project will help simplify progression pathways for young people in Laois & Offaly.
